The key points in an ancient calendar are its alignments with the midwinter and midsummer solstices. An important discovery made at Stonehenge was that certain of the megaliths were perfectly aligned with the winter and summer solstices.

Stonehenge has fostered many theories as to its original function and purpose. This megalithic monument, impressive as it is, is not the full story. Archaeologists have discovered that before the megaliths were erected, there were earlier structures dating as far back as 3000BC. Although some theories hold for certain structures, taken as a whole, most theories do not explain the older structures. Working on the assumption that these structures were calendars, resultant calculations proved this to be factual. “Stonehenge: Times Square BC” sets out in precise detail the remarkable solar calendars at Stonehenge.

These calendars evolved over 1,650 years and reveal that the winter solstice marked the last day of the year in ancient calendars. This suggests that the Mayans, projecting their calendar into the future, merely used 21/12/2012, a winter solstice, as the last day of the now famous Mayan calendar.
