Since human events prior to recorded history are virtually unknown, it leaves no alternative but to speculate. Except, speculation has a bad name... when people speculate the end result is probably wrong or unrealistic. Yet, although generally unknown, there is an art to speculation. While most archaeologists and anthropologists try to refrain from speculating, since it isn't 'scientific', but when they do the results speak for themselves. Most aren't very good at it... due to being 'academic thinkers' apparently. They just seem unable to put themselves in the shoes of the subject.
Conversely, there are advantages to thinking empirically which, in the greater sense, means spiritually. Cultivating one's internal resources is where the talented get their talent... thus the 'art'.
